Science fiction rulesScience fiction is popular among writers, including Jennifer Small.
"Healing of Dreams" is her novel about two sisters transported into a parallel dimension where magic exists.
New to NaNo, Small hit a rough patch mid-month: At 22,000 words written, she developed the flu. "I was so dizzy that I couldn't get down the stairs to write," she said. "I wanted to bring my computer upstairs, but I didn't have the energy to drag it (up the stairs)."
Small thought her story count would suffer from her illness, but by Nov. 19, she'd wracked up more than 44,000 words, making up the sick-time deficit in four days.
The Frederick transplant had heard of NaNoWriMo for a couple of years, but said she couldn't muster the story ideas until this November. Small, 32, said some friends prodded her to participate.
"I really didn't think I'd be able to do it, (but) I've kept to it.
"I've pulled some from my personal life, just for my main character," Small said. "Because I think what I've been through, it helps to make her a fuller person and more real, rather than just a two-dimensional character."
At first, she was a little squeamish about including personal memories, but hopes her character can help readers. "If I get published, maybe somebody will read (my book) and say, 'Hey, this sounds like something I've been through. If she can prevail, I can, too.'"
Small calls her writing a hobby, and said it's something that helps keep her from watching so much TV. She said that with so many ideas in her head, she wastes creativity by staring at the television all day.
Her creativity began at a young age, when she wrote poetry and short stories. "I've never stopped writing," she said. "I've got notebooks full of me writing this, that and the other."
